For anyone who has had their downloaded version of Luxor crash, it is important that you follow this procedure when trying to resolve it:

    1. Uninstall the program using the Windows Add or Remove Program feature in Control Panel before installing the new version.
    2. Install the new version.

The first time you run the new version you need to delete any existing profiles. To do this:

    1. Start the game.
    2. When it gets to the game menu click Change Profile.
    3. On the next screen, select the existing profile and click Delete.
    4. Do step 3 for any existing profiles.
    5. Now click New and it will create a new profile.

To the best of my knowledge, this should resolve the issue.

If you have any difficulties, contact us and our customer support can assist you further.

    Robert

  1.
We are aware of the issues with retail versions of Luxor: Quest for the Afterlife, and are working on an update to remedy the problem. Please check our forums often, as we will post the latest information available on a fix for the game. If you purchased the download version and are having issues, please uninstall your game, then remove your user profile folder. To do this, please perform the following:

Windows Vista: Open Computer, then click on Organize at the top of the window and select Folder and Search Options. When the next window appears, click on the View tab. Once in the View tab, select the option to Show hidden files and folders, then click OK to exit. After you have enabled the ability to view hidden files and folders, delete the profile folder found here: Local Disk(C:)> ProgramData> MumboJumbo> Luxor - Quest For The Afterlife

Windows XP: Open My Computer, click the Tools option at the top of the window, then click Folder Options. In the following window, select the View tab. In the list under the View tab, locate the option that reads Show hidden files and folders, and select it. Then click OK to exit. After you have enabled the ability to view hidden files and folders, delete the profile folder found here: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\MumboJumbo\Luxor - Quest For The Afterlife

Simply delete the entire Luxor – Quest For The Afterlife folder and nothing else. Once this folder has been deleted, reinstall the latest version of the game from the website you obtained it from. The website should have the latest build already available. This will ensure that your profile data from a previous version does not interfere with your current version. Failure to delete the profile data folder may result in undesired behavior, and we cannot guarantee that your new game will work if the old profile data folder is not removed. We hope this works for you!

A few users recently reported a problem when they tried to purchase the downloaded version of the game. Unfortunately, the origin of the problem lies within our e-commerce / DRM provider, TryMedia. This is what they told us:

“You may receive this error due to your local network configuration.
If our geolocation system cannot recognize your network's location from your IP address, then you may continue to receive this error.
Unfortunately, we can offer little advice other than to try the download of the product from a different area.
If you require a refund because of this issue, we will honor your request.

Apparently they want users to download the product from a different area, ie. country. Thanks. We are as upset about this as you are. If the problem persists we will ship you a box version.

yes, thanks. Loading initially takes a few minutes, intermittent almost-crashes, canopic jars and villians not showing up sometimes at all, sometimes only a few, even afer I have won them, almost complete slowdown in the "note the cliff" section, puzzle mode unlocked but not happening in the ongoing campaign, random locking and unlocking of store items and random game saving sequences, I think that's it. (!) I uninstalled and dowloaded a second time; deleted old profile as instructed in the forum. It worked once (except for slowdowns) and I completed the easy mode but now all is all as it was again. I have to say that I waited for this with much anticipation; cancelled a gamepass membership and purchased this with the assumption that if it was a great as its' predecessor I would have no qualms about paying full price for it and getting it directly from you; I was thinking that no other games will ever compare and so why look for more? But I am disappointed not only with the bugs but also with the shortness of it, the lack of interesting new features and/or the fleetingness of the few interesting new features. Battles are too easy (and I am no expert, believe me), treasures are lacking and (what exactly is the point of catching jewels if you never see them later, btw?) all in all I wish there were more to it. I think I would feel that way even if it were working properly, but can't say for sure. ~sighs~

I thought I'd post this to bring my complaint a bit more out in the open.

The first day LUXOR Quest came out I downloaded it to my one year old laptop and began the trial play. I got about 3-4 levels into the game and it crashed, Ok, try again. Crash, Crash, Crash, and Crash. Tried another laptop, same result. Tried my desktop and JOY it played just fine.
After contacting tech support about the issue a program change was made (V 82) and I was told to uninstall the old version (V 79) and install the new. Once again, continual crashing. I've forwarded the dumps, DXDIAGs and screen shots to tech support for the past two weeks, but even though a lot of emails have gone both ways no results so far.
The LUXOR series are all loaded to the laptop and play perfectly except for the Quest version. The laptop is an HP, running XP Media Center, all available updates and exceeds all minimum requrements.

I've defeated three thieves - however, in the main page with the map, I only see one canopic jar. Besides, I have no idea where to find the fourth thief. Any help? I would like to mention that Luxor games aren't friendly at all for color-blind people (like me).

    @yingli:

I apologize if I did not respond to an email you sent. I have even gone though all of my emails (I never delete anything!) and can't find the email you refered to.

In order to have any hope of tracking down your problems, I would need more specifcs to the items I have listed below.

    • Most importantly

When did you download the game last (what date) and from which website?

    • Loading initially takes a few minutes

The initial load do take more time. This is to minimize your wait times while you are actually playing.

    • Intermittent almost-crashes

Please explain what you mean by "almost-crashes".

    • Canopic jars and villians not showing up sometimes at all

Please explain. When does a canopic jar not show up? When does a villain not show up (and how can you tell)?

    • Sometimes only a few, even afer I have won them

I assume you are talking about the canopic jars. An earlier version of the game had this problem, but it should have been fixed in current version.

    • Almost complete slowdown in the "note the cliff" section

I'm not sure what you mean by "note the cliff". Please explain.

    • Puzzle mode unlocked but not happening in the ongoing campaign

I'm not sure what you mean by 'not happening in the ongoing campagin". Puzzle modes are only unlocked at certain times. For example, a new set of puzzles are unlocked each time you complete all of the cities in one region. So, even if puzzle mode has been unlocked, you will not have access to all the puzzles until you have conquered every city.

    • Random locking and unlocking of store items and

Again, we would need more specifics. Which items seem to be  unlocked or locked that shouldn't be and when?

    • Random game saving sequences

What do you man by "saving sequences"? In general, the game will save your progress after each level played.

I apologize for your difficulties. We attempt to resolve each and every problem, though sometimes it does take time and sometimes we run into issues that have no solution or cannot be duplicated on our end, which makes it almost impossible to solve.

    @dmorphis

On the issue of only one canopic jar shoing up even after you have caught 3 thieves, it sounds like you are playing with an older version. If you downloaded the game at MumboJumbo, you should be able to download and install it again using Josh's instructions. If you are downloading it from another portal, let us know which one so we can determine if they have the latest version or not. If you purchased the game at retail, we are still working on a solution for that.

Unfortunately, the problem with the canopic jars will prevent you from locating the 4th thief because he is only revealed when you have found the 3 canpic jars. Hopefully obtaining the latest version of the game will resolve the problem.

    Robert

    P.S.

Also, I understand your comment about color-blind-friendliness. Let me say that we do try to accmodate that in our games. I, too, am color-blind and always provide feedback in this area. However, in games that depend on color matching there is only so much that can be done. When I play Luxor, I have to focus on the patterns of the balls more than the colors, and this does make the game more challenging. The patterns were provided for just that reason. I have also noticed that some ball-sets are easier for me to play with than others, so you might experiment as you unlock and purchase additonal ball-sets.

    @DonH:

I understand you are frustrated. We have all been working at trying to duplicate and solve your problem. We have not been able to duplicate the problem you have reported, nor have other users reported a similar problem. The cause is almost surely the particular hardware/video drive environment you have. Even if earlier Luxor's ran okay on those same laptops, the newer Luxor has new features and apparently one of those is causeing the problems you are experiencing.

As I have said in the many emails we have shared, I appreciate your willingness to send us information, and I continue to try to solve the problem.

    Most importantly

When did you download the game last (what date) and from which website?

A few days ago, from this site, where I purchased it.

    Intermittent almost-crashes

Please explain what you mean by "almost-crashes".

action is paused for anywhere from 3-9 seconds and then resumes

Canopic jars and villians not showing up sometimes at all

Please explain. When does a canopic jar not show up? When does a villain not show up (and how can you tell)?

After a battle is won, (or at the appropriate moment thereafter, it's hard to remember b/c as I said it only worked once so far) the sequence where the jar appears and then floats to it's spot at the top is not happening.

Sometimes only a few, even afer I have won them

I assume you are talking about the canopic jars. An earlier version of the game had this problem, but it should have been fixed in current version.

    Well, it isn't.

Almost complete slowdown in the "note the cliff" section

I'm not sure what you mean by "note the cliff". Please explain.

I believe that is the caption of the level where there is a sort of rope bridge.

Puzzle mode unlocked but not happening in the ongoing campaign

I'm not sure what you mean by 'not happening in the ongoing campagin". Puzzle modes are only unlocked at certain times. For example, a new set of puzzles are unlocked each time you complete all of the cities in one region. So, even if puzzle mode has been unlocked, you will not have access to all the puzzles until you have conquered every city.

So the puzzles are entirely separate from the adventure campaign in this game, not included in each level as in the previous Luxor?

Random locking and unlocking of store items and

Again, we would need more specifics. Which items seem to be unlocked or locked that shouldn't be and when?

As I said, it is random; I didn't write it down so i can'tsay exctly which ones. Items that had been unlocked (power ups) and purchased are suddenly appearing locked one minute and then availabel the next.

    Random game saving sequences

What do you man by "saving sequences"? In general, the game will save your progress after each level played.

Sometimes, it will say "all progress will be lost" when you want to exit, sometimes it lets you exit but takes you to a different level when you return than the one that you were on previously.

I apologize for your difficulties. We attempt to resolve each and every problem, though sometimes it does take time and sometimes we run into issues that have no solution or cannot be duplicated on our end, which makes it almost impossible to solve.

I can understand that, I suppose, but it seems to me of that these aren't entirely unique issues from reading other posts here, and in my opinion, if the game wasn't ready it shouldn't have been released yet.

I think I have told you enough to give you something to work on and am not really interested in spending hours delineating these problems again and again. Games are supposed to be about relaxation and fun; this is a little too much like work!

Oh, and before you ask, this is running on an Acer laptop with sufficient resources for the previous version and the OS is Vista. Thanks.

Here is a list of places where you can find other frustrated users with the same crashing problem:

I seriously doubt that all these folks have the same "hardware/video drive environment". Heck, even I tried it on two different laptops with widely different components.

Even on the desktop, where the game actually runs, I have almost all the same issues as "Yingli" above.

    Edit:

Doing some further research I went to Event Viewer, and every time LUXOR crashed the following entry is logged:
Faulting application luxorquestfortheafterlife.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module dsound.dll, version 5.3.2600.5512, fault address 0x0000d6b9.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I'll quickly answer the issues that I can.

    >>action is paused for anywhere from 3-9 seconds and then resumes

This may occur from time to time when resources are being loaded.

    >>So the puzzles are entirely separate from the adventure campaign in this game, not included in each level as in the previous Luxor?

Yes. The puzzle campaign in Luxor 4 is different than Luxor 3. I belive all of the puzzles in Luxor3 were unlocked at the same time. In Luxor 4, you unlock the puzzle mode by assembling the Sphinx. Then, a set of puzzles is unlocked when you visit all of the cities in a region.

    >>Sometimes, it will say "all progress will be lost" when you want to exit,

If you exit a level before you have completed it, then you will have to start that level over again, which is why we warn you that your progress will be lost. This occurs when you press the ESC key and then choose to quit the game.

    >>sometimes it lets you exit but takes you to a different level when you return than the one that you were on previously.

Unless you have travelled all the way to another city, the game will restart by playing a level. However, the specific level is chosen randomly from a pool of available levels so you will often play a different level when you return. The number of levels you must complete to make it to the next city remains consistent, but the types of levels can change.

    Thanks for your feedback.

    Robert,
    Well, finally some good news.
I went into DXDIAG, Sound tab, DirectX features, and turned Hardware acceleration slider to "No Acceleration".
Started the game, and Voila..... NO CRASHES.
So I then bumped the Hardware Acceleration slider up 1 to "Basic Acceleration".
Started the game again, and YEA.... NO CRASHES.
Bumped it again to "Standard Acceleration".
    Still all okay.
    Bumped again to "Full Acceleration"
    Crash City.

So apparently any setting less than "Full" lets the game play.

Is there something you can do in the code to not take advantage of the "Full Acceleration" setting?

Brilliant. Great job of troubleshooting for sure!

I'd have to do some research to figure out what might be happening and whether there is a code change that would solve the problem. Suffice to say that you have fundamentally found a solution to the problem (or at least a very "workable" workaround).

I'll forward this info to our tech people (or they may read it here) and we can at least let others know about this solution.

Again, thanks for all of your time. I was focusing on video issues...I assumed the problem had something to do with the effects system based on the screen-shots you had sent! I would have never looked at sound.

what is the difference? Didn't I pay a retail price? What are my options?
  3.
Yingli, If you purchased a download version, then you already have the latest version. The retail CD had a build with some errors, and the turnaround time to get a new CD in stores is time consuming, costly, and logistically unfeasible to update every store with new CDs. Downloads, however, are easier to update. The retail disc contains some errors that the update fixes. If you have a download version, you have the latest version and in no way is your game different than the update that applies to retail customers. This update simply makes retail customers versions of Luxor up to date, which you already have.

    Hello! :-)

I bought my version of Luxor: Quest for the Afterlife from www.bigfish.com the very first day it was available there (16.11.) and have encountered some of the above mentioned problems too:

    # Canopic jars and vilians not showing up
Please explain. When does a canopic jar not show up? When does a villain not show up (and how can you tell)?

I'm rank 15 now (with over 10.000.000 points) and have conquered all cities/areas, assembled the seven artifacts and traveled along every path between the various cities - I even remember to have played successfully several times in this new battle mode against thieves, but I haven't gotten any jar, all the four places on the map are empty. So far I have only 4 of the 12 achievements - is it possible I still miss something that is required to fight for the jars?

    # Random locking and unlocking of store items and
Again, we would need more specifics. Which items seem to be unlocked or locked that shouldn't be and when?

It's not completely randomly for me - if I want to spend the coins I have earned in the puzzle mode in the shop, some items in the second and third row are blocked even if I have unlocked them in the adventure mode long ago. Going back to the adventure mode, playing one map and entering the shop again from there makes them available again. I can make a screenshot if this is helpful to you?

There seems to be a third problem for me: even after I have completed and assembled all seven artifacts I got randomly on some maps chests like them for the parts of the artifacts. If I hit it, Nefertiti will cheer "Amazing!"... but all I got is three coins like from the scarabs, nothing more. I'm not sure if this is a feature or a bug?

Sorry for my English... fortunately my German is by far better. :-)

  4.
I just thought I'd post this in case it might help other gamers.

I started out having several problems with the game -- "unhandled exception" (?) errors, crashes, and worst of all, slow downs on some levels to the point that it would take 30 seconds or so for the marbles to cross the screen! Although my computer meets and/or exceeds all the stated requirements, I decided to change to low detail video on the options. Ever since then, it's worked almost flawlessly (and much much faster, which is a 'good news .... bad news' thing since it's a lot harder when running full speed!). I don't see any significant difference in the quality of the graphics either.

The only other "problem" I'm having is an inability to locate the last two canopic jars. I've earned promotions to level 25, completed all the artifacts, visited all the cities, etc. What am I to do now? Where the heck are those jars?

I'd just like to clarify....anyone who has downloaded the game should be able so re-download the game from their original download source if they feel they may have an earlier version of the game.

@yingli: Your best bet is to re-download the game from MumboJumbo.com. Download version use a slightly different process for updating than the retail patch. For the download update, we recommend that you first uninstall Luxor. After you reinstall, it is important to delete any existing profiles and start new. The version on MumboJumbo.com is the latest version available. We have also distributed this to all of the portals but it is often difficult to verify if they have place the newest version on their site, which is why I recomment you download directly from MumboJumbo.com.

If you have any additonal questions let us know.

@grannygamer: First, thanks for your input on tuning the graphics detail down if necessary.

The canopic jars are revealed as you capture thieves. If you already have a canopic jar, then I assume you have captured one theif? Have you seen a second thief yet?

    @Sheftu:

If you downloaded the game the first day it was available from Big Fish, then you probably got an earlier version. After getting some feedback from players, we were able to track down some problems and put out a newer version that solved many of the issues.

I know that the new version has been distributed to Big Fish, but I don't know if they have made it available or not. When the rest of the team gets back from Thanksgiving, we should be able to answer that question for you.

As for the issues you reported:

    Canopic Jars and Thieves:

There are three main thieves that should appear on the map at various intervals. Just so we are clear, these are not the same as the minor thieves you sometimes battle when you enter a city. Instead, these thieves are revealed each time you recieve one of the 3 Sun Discs of Aten. Also, this has nothing to do with acheivements.

So, my questions for you are:

    • Have you recieved any of the 3 Sun Discs of Aten?
    • Have you revealed any of the 3 wandering thieves (also refered to as prophets)?
    • Have you captured any of the 3 wandering theives (e.g. placed a Sun Disc to trap them, then travelled the path until you caught them)?

Answers to these questions will be very helpful.

    Store Items:

Yes, screen shots and specifics (as you have already given) on when the items show up or don't show up would be very helpful.

    Artifact Treasure:

If the artifact treasure is showing up even after you have assembled all of the artifacts, then just think of it as something extra fun to shoot.

Thanks for your time and the information you have provided. If you want to provide answers to the quesitons above and/or send screenshots, email them to me at rmadsen@mumbojumbo.com.

    Thanks

    Reply to RMadsen ....

To answer your questions about the Canopic Jars and Thieves:

    * Have you recieved any of the 3 Sun Discs of Aten? -- YES, ALL THREE; But I must have "misused them" since it now says the power in my discs has been depleted (or some such verbiage).

    * Have you revealed any of the 3 wandering thieves (also refered to as prophets)? -- Yes, I think so. I don't know how many though

    * Have you captured any of the 3 wandering theives (e.g. placed a Sun Disc to trap them, then travelled the path until you caught them)? -- I can recall doing this twice, I think.

Does this help? By the way, I downloaded the game from Shockwave.com (I'm a paid member so I got the full version).

I have uninstalled, deleted profiles and redownloaded three times now, as I stated earlier. So far, in a new game at medium level I have one canopic jar, but still the slowdown and semi crash problems, so I will try granny's advice and see how that goes.

    @GrannyGamer:

Each Sun Disc of Aten is depleted once it is used, so this is normal. Once you have used a Sun Disc of Aten to catch a thief, you cannot use it again. From your description it sounds like you have captured all three thieves. It also sounds like you are playing an earlier version of the game since this was a problem that was identified in our earliest release. I'll have to see what the procedure is for updating from Shockwave and get back to you.

    @danamarcel:

It sounds like you are playing an earlier version of the game that had a bug related to the Canopic Jars. Downloading the newest version of the game should fix this for you. However, if you purchased the game at a location other than MumboJumbo.com, then you may have to update from your original portal. Where did you obtain your current version of the game?

************************************************ RESOLVING SOUND RELATED SYSTEM CRASH *****************************************************

If your version of Luxor: Quest for the Afterlife is randomly crashing with an Unkown Error the problem may be a sound driver issue on your computer.

If the details of the error specify dsound.dll then is is definitely a sound driver issue.

Here is the procedure for overcoming this problem (these are for Windows XP):

    1. Click Start, Run.

    2. Type DxDiag and click OK.

    3. If you are prompted to verify drivers, it is up to you whether you want to do this or not, though it isn't a bad idea.

    4. Click the Sound tab.

    5. Move the Hardware Sound Acceleration Level slider to the left so that it says No Acceleration.

    6. Try running the game. It should now run with no problems.

You may be able to use some hardward acceleration, but you will have to test the different setting on your computer to see. Basically, this means going back to DxDiag and moving the slider up a notch each time and then seeing if the game still runs wihout error.

************************** UPDATING THE GAME IF YOU ORIGINALLY PURCHASED IT ONLINE ***************************************

If you originally purchased your game from an online source, then you should be able to obtain the latest version by downloading it again from the same site. These instructions should work. If you try this and it doesn’t seem to work, start by contacting the technical support for the site you downloaded from. If that doesn’t help, then contact us at support@mumbojumbo.com.

    Here is the process:

    1. Uninstall the existing version of the game.

    2. Download the game from the original online source as if you were purchasing it for the first time.

    3. If you have purchased an unlock key, you should be able to use the same unlock code to unlock the new version.

You may be able to now play the game from the point where you left off, but if you still have problems (or want to be extra sure), do steps 4 & 5 below:

    4. Start the game. From the main menu (before you actually start playing) click Change Profile. Delete any existing profiles. Then create a new one.

    5. Start a new game with the new profile.

As always, if you have any difficulties, send an email to support@mumbojumbo.com, or do both!

I have purchased the retail version of Luxor - Quest for the Afterlife, and I have installed the patch and the game ran fine when I first played it. Now I have come back to play where I left off and the game crashes at start up and wont even load. The Mumbo Jumbo logo page comes up then the loading page shows breifly (less than a second) then this error comes up :

    ---------------------------------------------
Validation error occured on the line number 329 in the file 'maps/CampaignMaps/Main/CampaignMapInfo.txt on key 'AlternateLevelType':
Unknown key 'AlternateLevelType' with value " classic

Would you like to continue? Undesired behavior may occur.
    ---------------------------------------------

I click No and then this error comes up :

    ---------------------------------------------
Validation error occured on the line number 329 in the file 'maps/CampaignMaps/Main/CampaignMapInfo.txt on key 'City':
Validation error occured on the line number 329 in the file 'maps/CampaignMaps/Main/CampaignMapInfo.txt on key 'AlternateLevelType':
Unknown key 'AlternateLevelType' with value " classic
    '.

Would you like to continue? Undesired behavior may occur.
    ---------------------------------------------

I click No again and again this error comes up :

    ---------------------------------------------
Validation error occured on the line number 329 in the file 'maps/CampaignMaps/Main/CampaignMapInfo.txt on key 'City':
Validation error occured on the line number 329 in the file 'maps/CampaignMaps/Main/CampaignMapInfo.txt on key 'AlternateLevelType':
Unknown key 'AlternateLevelType' with value " classic
    '.

Would you like to continue? Undesired behavior may occur.
    ---------------------------------------------

When I click No this time it closes up with the window saying that Windows is searching for a solution to my problem. I've tried the DxDiag but I've got 3 sound tabs (Sound 1, Sound 2 and Sound 3) and none of them have a slide bar.

    My computer has the following:
Windows Vista Ultimate 32 Bit with Service Pack 1
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 with 3GB of RAM
ATI Radeon HD4670 Video Card with 1Gb of RAM

Someone please tell me I didn't just waste $20 on a game that wont work and the store wont take back because it's opened........
